QUEBEC CITY, May 23, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com ) - The crucifix above the Speaker's chair in the Quebec National Assembly will stay, says Premier Jean Charest. Responding to a report by a pair of academics on the problems of integrating immigrants into Quebec society, Charest said, "We won't rewrite history. The church has played a major role in who we are today as a society, the crucifix is more than a religious symbol."

Wow, that takes courage and a respect for the past that we don't often see... Very refreshing.
I just think that it is not right to meddle with history and the past. This country was founded by men and women who were mostly Christians. Some of them perhaps might not have been much of a Christian in practice but were they ever asked to identify their religion they probably put down Christianity as their religion. They looked at the crucifix not just as a symbol of their faith but as an embodiment of certain ideals and principles by which they strived to run the affairs of the city or province or what have you. For them the Crucifix served as a reminder, in a very public place, of those principles. And to remove that Crucifix, it seems to me, somehow diminishes the role not only of that ideal but also of those founders in building this country. If it offends some, well too bad! My main concern, of course, is while they take down the Crucifix they may also try to sweep those ideals under the carpet. And the recent immigrants will also have, without trying to rewrite the history, their due share of it in time. I think Canada's traditions guarantee it!
